The Latin phrase memento mori translates as 'remember your mortality'. Dating back to times of antiquity the idiom was used to describe art that featured a common motif such as a skull, skeleton or ‘figure of death’ within the composition. The memento mori was utilised to remind individuals of their own mortal state of being and was a constant source of inspiration and meditation in medieval Europe. In today’s context the memento mori can be interpreted in a more abstract sense; the scenes of a tsunami on a television screen or the ashes of a loved one in a vase can all be seen as material for reflection in the context of what it means to be mortal. This exhibition explores the seminal art historical genre through the work of five talented new contemporaries; Nadine Feinson,  Beatrice Haines, David Jones, Shane Mecklenburger & Kentaro Yamada, each artist presenting new ways for us to reflect on our own mortal state of being.
